Ethnobotany
The Canary Island Palm, or Phoenix canariensis is widely planted as an ornamental plant in warmer areas of the world, mainly places with Mediterranean climates. The plant is also known as a date palm, meaning that it produces dates, an edible fruit that is ripe during the summer. It is easy to care for, so it is used a lot for landscaping and as a house plant. It requires regular watering as well as frequent pruning, but other than that, its easy care makes for it to be one of the most desirable house plants in the world.
Another use for the Canary Island Palm is using its sap for Palm Syrup. Mostly, the syrup is produced in La Gomera in the Canary Islands. The main producers are based in La Gomera because the tree grows very well in the climate of that region. The sap is condensed and is known to taste slightly like maple syrup. The fruit of the Canary Island Palm has been eaten by humans in times of need, but does not taste like the dates of other date palms. The fruit is also used as animal fodder.
The Canary Island Palm is also used regularly for islands in large parking lots and can be used for parking lot buffer strips and median strips on highways and planted in sidewalk cutouts. This tree is also planted successfully in urban areas, even when air is polluted and there is poor drainage.

Current Research
The Canary Island Palm grows in areas with a warm climate. It can also be found in places with pollution, poor drainage and drought. It has a height of 40 to 60 feet and a spread of 20 to 25 feet. It does best in costal regions due to its moderately high salt tolerance. It can also grow in areas with limited space for soil such as streets and parking lots. The trunk will grow mostly straight without any droop to it. The stalks of inconspicuous flowers are filled with clusters of small orange fruit which ripen early in summer. The trunk of the palm can reach a diameter of four feet and has a diamond shaped pattern from the scars of old leaves.
Current research shows that the transportation of the palm trees requires certain techniques to make sure it is done successfully. These techniques include cutting off and tying up the leaves. This is the best and most efficient way of transporting the trees. Once this is done they are carried from place to place and survive only on the water that is stored in the trunk until they are able to be planted and grow new roots.

Creative Essay
I love going to California because of the cool palm trees that don’t grow in Oregon. I liked their tall leaves at the top of the tree and the rough trunk that I liked to try to climb. I always saw them in front of houses or in the middle of parking lots. One day my mom proposed that we should move to California and as a family we decided to go. In my back yard we had two of these palm trees in the middle of our lawn. I had an idea one day that I wanted to use these trees for something cool because I liked them so much. I decided that I was going to tie up a bed sheet and make a hammock. I used this hammock every day to lay and soak in the California sun for hours on end.
Now that I am at college I am away from my family my friends and all of my stuff. I love all the people and the environment is better than I could have imagined. I do miss one thing from my house though. I miss lying down in that hammock and soaking in the California sun.
